PodCamp Boston 2010 – Preparing for the Future

PodCamp Boston 5 LogoThis year PodCamp Boston celebrated its 5th year of sharing, teaching and learning with the Northeast’s marketing and social media community.

The theme? “Preparing for the Future” and they sure did deliver. The event was a fast track to learning about what’s happening, what’s new, and where things are going.

Roughly 225 attendees gathered at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center (NERD) in Cambridge for the sold-out, two-day event on Saturday and Sunday, September 25 & 26th.  Founders Chris Brogan and Chris Penn were on hand to welcome the crowd and share a bit about how PodCamp Boston’s humble beginnings grew into a first class un-conference.

Scheduled sessions covered everything from blogging and video production to geolocation and even agvocacy, or how agriculture uses digital tools to share stories.  Branding with Tamson McMahon and Mearsurement with Wayne Kurtzman were just some of the big hits of the weekend.  The venue provided a wonderful learning environment and was a great space to meet new people, network, and initiate unscheduled discussion sessions.  All levels of participants were welcomed.

Social Media Breakfast NH Revisits Nashua

This past spring ActiveEdge volunteered to help bring The Social Media Breakfast NH (SMBNH) to Nashua for the first time.  It was a smashing success.

This fall, we were able to once again bring the Social Media learning experience to Gate City businesses and professionals.  Working alongside SMBNH founder Leslie Poston of Uptown Uncorked, the Friday morning  event (9/17/10) drew roughly 55 attendees for a morning of education and sharing.  The topic?  Online brand management and dealing with crisis or bad PR through the use of social media.

The event, graciously hosted at Rivier College, featured a diverse panel of speakers. First up was Kim Gagliardi, Nashua based PR Communications Manager for Dow Jones. Kim detailed an example of dealing with negative press by listening, developing a response plan and adapting the response approach based on each specific incident. Her even keel, no-nonsense approach was an informational step-by-step plan for helping companies manage brands online and mitigate damage.  A real how-to guide for small businesses.

#140 Conference Comes to Boston

The day was long but brief. Sounds impossible doesn’t it? Let me explain.

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010 was the first ever #140 Character Conference held in Boston, MA. The day-long event explored the state of NOW, a high level look at emerging technologies and real-time internet.

Held at the The Back Bay Events Center, speakers shared how they leveraged new technologies to find a competitive edge in today’s business, personal and non-profit environments.

A Long Day
From 8:30 AM to 6 PM, the day was chock-a-block full of speakers ranging from journalists (@JeffCutler) and professional media outlets (@kordmiller of WBZ-TV and @tmcenroe of NECN.com) to musicians (@amandapalmer), and higher education (@perryhewitt of Harvard and @radiofreegeorgy of Tufts). Even non-profits (@WayneNH of New Hampshire Destination Imagination) and individuals struggling to reunite a family torn apart by national conflict (@dewittn) shared their stories.

Boston’s finest, the Boston Police Department (@Boston_Police) were represented and shared how they use social media to monitor, communicate, and otherwise interact with the communities they serve.

A Brief Day
In keeping with the conference theme of 140 characters (@Twitter reference entirely intended), the event format was most decidedly, brief. Presenters were given a mere 9 minutes to share their viewpoints in laser like sharpness. Key note speakers got a few more.

The pace was fast and furious. In fact it was twitter-like in its ability to expose attendees to boatloads of new ways of thinking, doing and being, all while using emerging technologies. It was a day filled with groundbreaking ideas and ways of communicating.

Thanks to the organizing and coordinating efforts of Ellen Rossano (@EllenRossano), Jeff Pulver (@JeffPulver) was able to bring this innovative event to the area.  ActiveEdge is proud to have attended and been a part of it.
