3 Ways to Increase Your Company’s Online Presence Without Starting a Blog

We all know that blogs are good. You could say that they’re becoming a marketing best practice for small businesses. In fact, in a previous post, ActiveEdge identified what we felt were some of the Top Benefits of Business Blogging.
But what if adding a blog to your site just isn’t in the plan? Maybe you don’t have time to actively dedicate to creating and maintaining it. Maybe you think you’re not a great communicator. Or maybe you have all the best intentions, but realize you’re just under-staffed to do it in-house and under-budgeted to pay for an outside vendor to manage it.
What can be done then, to earn some online link love? Here are just a few ideas guaranteed to enrich your online presence without adding a blog.
1. Book Reviews. A little different than the reports you got graded on when you were 12 years old, but the concept is still pretty close. If you’ve read any books lately, go online to Amazon and write a short book review. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t buy the book there, just give your opinion anyway. Amazon has a huge online presence and listing your review there can increase your visibility. Don’t forget to add your name, company name and Twitter account so people can find you.
And since you’ve already written the review, go ahead and post it to your Linkedin account under the “Reading List”. It can’t hurt to let your customers know you’re well informed on current topics and trends.
Authors will be flattered that you read and took the time to comment about what they wrote. Readers of the post often read the comments and may find your opinion of value, especially if you offer up some additional and complementary resources that improve the post. Naturally, search engines feed on comments just like they do on new content. A win-win-win for all involved.
Now post those images, regularly – not once every 6 months – to places where people can see them. If you’re the administrator for your company’s Facebook page, add them to the photos section. If you don’t have a company page, start a company Flickr account and post them there.
Don’t forget to tag them. On Facebook, you can identify people in the photos and you can also tag them with an “@” symbol when typing a status update. On Flickr you can add tags when you upload the files. Tagging is critical. Search engines can’t ‘read’ images since there is nothing there to read, so you have to help them understand the content that is contained in the image.
Finally, direct people to the images though email, Twitter, Facebook, or even in-person. Ask your business friends to link to them and ask them to leave comments (see how well that works? You’ll be getting comments as well as leaving them).
The key to all these suggestions is that you regularly participate. Get out there, get online and before you know it, you’ll be earning some link love, even without a blog.
