Blogging has taken the Internet by storm. In the 1990’s there were only about 150 blogs on the World Wide Web. It was a lonely place.  Today there are millions.  In fact 133,000,000 blogs were indexed by Technorati since 2002 according to Technorati’s 2008 State of the Blogosphere Report.

That’s right, the State of the Blogosphere Report. Blogging is now so prevalent that the community around it has its own name; the blogosphere. And it’s so integral to how we as individuals and companies communicate that there’s a report on its status and wellbeing.

Given the growth and apparent ubiquity of blogs you may be wondering why you (or your company) haven’t already started blogging on WordPress or Blogger or even Drupal.  But don’t worry about the pressure to post, take your time to figure out if blogging is the best choice for your style.

Here are some benefits that can help you decide if blogging is right for your business. In my next post, I’ll add a list of pitfalls so you’ll be well informed should you decide to consider blogging on a more serious note.

Benefits of Business Blogging

  1. Blogs give a huge boost your SEO value for your website. Each blog post is considered a new web page and is indexed by the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.  The posts themselves add rich, relevant content around topics that you want to be found on.  Connect the blog to your website and enjoy the benefits that each new page brings your way. The old adage, “Content is King” is alive, well and living on blogs. Oh, and did I mention that blogs are incredible search engine optimization tools?
  2. Blogs allow you to share your knowledge and to position yourself as an expert in your field. After all, a blog post shares information that you usually share in person.  Publishing what you know shows others that you know what you’re talking about.
  3. Blogs open channels of communication to and with your audience. A blog provides another means for you and your customers to interact, and that’s always a positive thing.  You can get direct feedback on product releases, new product introductions, customer service or any topic at all.
  4. Blogs are great research sources. No surprise here. Close contact with your audience gives you the chance to harness that dialog and probe deeper for immediate customer preferences.
  5. Blogs let you differentiate your competitive advantages. You get to write about topics that highlight your company’s talents and special gifts. Having a place to write about things that you do well in a more relaxed setting has some real value. You can share, not shout, at your customers, and that helps strengthen a solid reputation.

With so many great points, could there be a downfall to business blogging? Possibly. Check back for the next post about pitfalls of blogging to see if you should jump in or pass.
